Questions about frames

I saw the same frames but they cost much more at the local optical shop, are these seconds?
Our frames are factory fresh from major US manufacturers or distributors of frames. They are not seconds or knock-offs.

What do the numbers on the frames mean?
Frames are identified by manufacturer/designer, model number or name, size, and color information. Size information contains the horizontal measurement of each lens in millimeters (i.e. 50) and the distance between the lenses (bridge size) i.e. 20. Frame size may also contain the temple length in millimeters such as 140. Therefore a frame size would be written 50/20 or 50-20 or 50/20-140. Color may be noted as a description such as antique gold, other manufacturers use a color number. Manufacturer, model or name, color, and temple length information are by custom found on the temple of the frame. Eye and bridge size are found on the bridge of the frame.

Can you put lenses in my old frame?
Without first seeing the frame and knowing its condition, we can't answer that. For the service of replacement eyeglass lenses we recommend prescription-lenses.com

I was told my frame was discontinued by the manufacturer, can you get me this frame?
No, once a frame is discontinued it is no longer distributed.

Questions about lenses

What are the best lenses?
This depends on your prescription. In general, we want lenses to be thin and lightweight to make them physically comfortable and cosmetically appealing.

What is single vision?
A lens that has one focal power, usually a correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism.

What is bifocal?
In addition to a correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism, a bifocal contains an addition for near vision. There are two focal powers.

What is progressive lens?
A progressive lens make a progressive change from distance vision to near vision providing an infinite range of powers in between. An additional advantage of progressive lenses is the lack of a bifocal line.

What is aspheric?
An aspheric lens uses a parabolic curvature versus a spherical curvature. It has two benefits, one is that it reduces the thickness of a lens making it lighter and more cosmetically appealing, secondly it reduces magnification (or minification) making the wearer's eyes appear more realistic in size.

What is high index?
The index of refraction refers to the ability of a material to bend light. The higher the index the more ability to bend light. High index lenses are thinner and lighter than their standard counterparts making them more cosmetically appealing and more comfortable to wear since they are lighter.

Questions about prescription information

What do the numbers on my eyeglass prescription mean?
An eyeglass prescription contains information showing the lens power required to correct vision problems. It consists of sphere power, cylinder power, cylinder axis, bifocal addition, and prism power. Your prescription may or may not contain all of these numbers, for example if you do not have a bifocal you would not have a bifocal addition in your prescription. Most prescriptions do not contain prism power. A PD (pupillary distance) measurement is also needed to produce your glasses.
